The kaokao (zigzag) patterns on the front reflect life’s journey, with the white space between the lines representing the first light of dawn - a symbol of new beginnings, of futures yet written and the promise that lies just beyond the horizon. On the back, the kaokao design speaks to the movement of a waka (canoe) - tacking, weaving, navigating its way across uncharted waters. It is a tribute to the past, to the warriors who came before, charting the course so that others might follow.
